As usual, when one drug gets generic, the big pharma companies launch a "new" formulation or a new brand... [Wink] Could somebody help to understand if there is a real difference between atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin, fluvastatin and all the products of this class. Why should the health insurance not recommend to systematically take the cheapest "quality proven" generic?
This would save so much to the budget and then more people could get decent health insurance coverage [Wink] [Razz]

Original or generic?

Are you talking short- or long-term savings? [Wink]

You may save a bit short-term, but taking drugs like Lipitor will cost you a lot, lot more in terms of side effects and your entire health too in the mid- to long-term.

I had a friend whose doctor put him on Lipitor, and my friend asked if it was necessary as he had heard of the negative side effects Lipitor has on a person's liver.

The doctor retorted jokingly: Well, then you have a choice - either your liver goes, or your heart goes!

Joke or not, what kind of choice is that? Either way, YOU go!!! [Wink]

So my recommendation is to look at natural alternatives to drugs to lower your cholesterol levels. They are out there, and you owe it to yourself and your family to get the information you need.

If you wish to, you can email me at sunny@makinglifebetter.info and I will help point you to the right places.

Regards

Sunny

As for the statin's there are many differences. What I recommend to my patient's is Lovastatin the generic for Mevacor. It's inexpensive and it works. Also some of my patients have been purchasing their drug's "cheper" online. What Ihave found is that their cholesterol is uncontrolled. Why? Because what they buy online some times doesn't have any actual drug in it or its very low or its very high... Whichever the case its only harming their bodies.

Depending on your risk factors determines how low you want to reduce your cholesterol. If you have diabetes the current guidelines is to reduce LDL to 130 Without diabetes 160. For some people it is appropriate to go as low as 100 depending on age and other risk factors.
The current guidelines for lovastatin is to start around 10 mg and increase the dosage depending on side effects and how much the need is to reduce cholesterol.
