I'm currently taking this medication for chest pains and angina, but am getting swollen ankles which is becoming increasingly uncomfortable - I cannot even fit into some of my shoes. Does any one have the same side effects or can anyone advise a similar medication for chest pain? Thanks!

This comment is late in coming, but swollen ankles is a side effect of Norvasc. I trust by now that your doctor has informed you of this fact.

I have recently started taking Norvasc for high blood pressure. After a couple of days, I began to notice an irritability and then what I would tern depression. The days I have left it off the depressed feeling does not seem to be as predominate. Has anyone else experience this?

I note in your message "swollen ankles" My ankles are very swollen; also since taking "water pill" triamterene HCTZ have experienced extreme dizzines, ringing in ears. When ankle swelling subsided, I did not take above medication and the dizziness and ringing sensations didn't occurr. However, ankles are swollen again so I will try this "water" pill again and call doctor if not better. Does or did anyone have similar experience? If so, what was your remedy? Thanks for listening.

My ankles were also swollen and my feet were so swollen I had to go out and buy Wide shoes which isnot easy when you wear a size 6. I was doing fine just taking Benicar, then the Dr. decided to add Norvasc. I was light headed, could hardly walk across the floor, my feet hurt and my restless leg syndrome became so bad I was having trouble getting to sleep. Then one day I looked up the side effects of Norvasc and had almost every one of them. So, I just decided to wean myself off the NOrvasc. My left foot swelled up like a football. After a while it went down, now my ankles are down to normal, and I feel great. I sometimes think the medicines will kill you before the disease kills you.
Anyone else have any of these problems?

I'm hoping that other folks having edema (water retention/swelling of the ankles/feet) are going in to their MDs to have this checked out. I have been on a beta-blocker (pindolol) for 6 months. I'm 43 years old and newly diagnosed with slight hypertension. My MD told me to watch out for signs of edema, and report them as soon as they occur. Last night when I noticed this swelling, I talked to an advise nurse @ my HMO and she was insistent that I go to Urgent Care. The concern was for the development of pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) which signal congestive heart failure. While the MD *did* hear the 'squeaks' indicative of fluid in the lungs, subsequent chest x-ray revealed nothing problematic. I was advised to promptly consult with my primary care MD to switch OFF the beta blocker (which slows the heart and causes it to be less efficient... evidenced by the edema).

Have been on Norvasc for some time now. When I first started taking it, I had severe swelling of the ankles but since doctor put me on HCTZ once a day, I no longer have symptoms. I used to take atenolol but since I need to receive allergy shots, I am no longer able to take beta blockers so had to switch to a different blood pressure medicine. Have had no other problems. Be sure to talk with your doctor about the swelling.

What to do when a patient has Norvasc or Calcium channel Blocker edema. Simply omit ca ch blockers, and try to take Alternatives. For Hypertensives choices are Beta Blockers, ACE, Diuretics. If you have Ischemic heart disease like angina, better to increase dose of Beta blockers or nitrates. P.S: Consult your physician first before changing your drugs. Thanks
