My fiance and I are trying to concieve our first child. He has been on Clozaril for 7+ years. I've been searching the web for any info on possible birth defects or fertility problems caused by the medication, but I can't find anything on the subject.

If anyone has personal experience or has read anything that will shed some light on the subject, I would love to hear from you!

I've read somewhere that women on Clozapine are more likely to concieve than they are on other medications. How this compares to someone not prescribed any anti-psychotics, again I don't know.
Anyway good luck.

FleshandBlood, the FDA categorizes prescripion drugs in pregnancy. The categories reflect the potential for teratogenicity. There are five A,B,C,D and X. Clozapine is rated "B" which means: "Animal studies do not indicate a risk to the fetus; however, there are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women." This should be taken with a grain of salt as there may never be a well controlled study of clozapine in pregnant women due to its side effects esp. agranulocytosis.
However, this does not sound like it applies in your situation. The answer, or at least the best possible answer available, lies in the medical literature.
If you are interested, I would be glad to help in your search. Please remember to discuss your decision with your physician as my purpose is to help stimulate that conversation.
