I have been on Protriptyline (10 mg. daily) for ten years for treatment of chronic depression. It is the only drug that has kept me stabilized. My psychiatrist tried everything, from tricyclics to Prozac to Wellbutrin, and I had bad reactions on all of those drugs, nearly requiring hospitalization in a few cases. This week, when I went to have my prescription refilled, I was informed by the pharmacist that Protriptyline has been discontinued by Odyssey Manufacturing. I feel like my equillibrium has been yanked from me. The doctor has put me on Nortriptyline (50 mg. daily) as a substitute, and I feel horrible, cotton-mouthed and foggy, craving sweets, and I cannot stop weeping. The doctor has just called in a mild stabilizer called Abilify which should help, I hope, but what I really need is my Protriptyline again. I cannot function without it. Does anyone have any suggestions, any options? Any pharmaceutical reps reading this board? Please someone help me.

I am still having a problem getting Vivactil, and this is March 2007. Have you been able to find out what has happened to it? Believe it or not I take it for my iritable bowel syndrome. But it is the only thing that has helped me and I am concerned too.
I am now taking something called Surmontil(another antidepressant). It helps but not as much as the Vivactil.
