This antibiotic gives me the runs and it's still got 6 more days to go. What do YOU DO TO STOP THIS from happening ?

within 24 hrs of taking Ceftin 500 mg 2x day, I had total liquid bowels every 15 min. My dr. told me the Ceftin had destroyed the good bacteria in my colon and the bad bacteria was running rampant. I was told to stop taking the meds; it was ok to take something over-the-counter to stop the runs, and to let my colon heal for a couple days and then I'd be put on a different medication. I am also taking lactobacillis to try and re-establish the good bacteria. As a woman, I will be surprised if I don't also get a yeast infection from this.

I wanted to reply because I can so sympathize with your situation. While my problem had been urinary tract inflammation and frequent need to visit the toliet, I did want to share what I have learned from my experience and several friends. I don't disagree with your doctor's advice, but I would add that 3 friends of mine found that high potency probiotics were essetial following antibiotics. One friend who had been on anti-diarrehea meds for quite a while (following cancer radiation treatments) found that 2 capsules 3 times a day enabled her to quit the anti-diarrehea meds. So, don't give up if you see no results from one capsule a day from a modest probiotic. Find something with bacteria in the billions per capsule. Take a mixture of probiotics and make sure you include bifidum, which is essential for the lower intestine. I hope you get feeling better soon. My own "silver bullet" has been digestive enzymes. I don't sell anything. I just wanted to share what might get your digestion back on track. Hang in there.

I would also mention that on a recent course of antibiotics I looked for guidance on whether taking probiotics with the antibiotics was worthwhile - because the antibiotics will be killing off the probiotics. I wondered if I should just wait until through with the antibotics. The doctor I asked thought I should take the probiotics during the course with the antibiotics and the websites I reviewed indicated that it was a good idea to take the probiotics, but suggested staggering the timing - take the probiotics at a different time than the antibiotics. And I decided to increase the course of probiotics when I completed the 7-day course of antibiotics.

At some point during the healing process, you may want to consider taking the amino acid supplement for Glutamine because it helps the digestive tract, and you may want to consider the need for overall supplementation of vitamins and minerals to give your body nutrients that you have not been able to absorb during the diarreha episode.

Hope this helps.
